They are grotesque creatures that will welcome the public in the Städel Garden.
The works will be presented in the Städel Museum’s garden in the summer of 2023.
Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone transforms the prominent hill above the Garden Halls into a strange landscape. In the group of works Sunrise. East, Rondinone assigns each month a head with characteristic and, as it were, highly reduced facial features. Larger than life and set in shiny silver aluminum, the chunky sculptural heads are reduced to their facial expressions. They trigger the most diverse associations, suggesting ritual masks and ghosts, but also the visual language of comics, emoticons, or memes.
