Opera seria in three acts by Georg Friedrich Händel
The warrior Orlando has lost his bearings: should he seek his fortune in love or in the pursuit of glory? The sorcerer Zoroastro wants to lead him back to the path of military virtue, but Orlando resists: instead of fighting, he wants to become a hero as a lover. His beloved Angelica, whom Orlando once saved the life of, now desires the soldier Medoro. When Orlando learns of their liaison, he loses his mind. Furious with jealousy, he kills Angelica and Medoro. With his magic power, Zoroastro saves the two and finally frees Orlando from his madness. Remorseful, he promises to curb his passions in the future. The shepherdess Dorinda also suffers from unfulfilled longing for love: she has her eye on Medoro, but he rejects her with a heavy heart. Dorinda deals with her heartbreak far more calmly than Orlando: at the end, she invites people to a feast in her hut, where both love and fame are to be celebrated.
The musical direction is by Italian-born Simone Di Felice, who since 2017.
