She changes roles and perspectives, plays with relationships in the creative process and always opens new doors between photography and other arts. With IN REFERENCE TO A SUNNY PLACE, the most comprehensive survey exhibition in Germany to date, Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) honors the Finnish artist Elina Brotherus.
On view are central themes and works from her past 20 creative years. In her image series and video works, Brotherus repeatedly explores the manifold connections between model, artist, and viewer, between man and woman, figure and place, as well as the genres of portrait and nude. With her typical sometimes curious, sometimes touching, sometimes ironic self-stagings, the photographer explores emotions and tensions, for example, being alone and being together, being lost and being safe, love, longing, mourning and, in her more recent works, more often joy.
