Description
The Benedictine monastery, set up in 1100, and the Johannesberg Castle, built in 1716 are considered the world´s first Riesling winery. After all wine has been cultivated on the Johannisberg since 817. Since 1720 the world-famous "Schloss Johannesberger Riesling" has been known to grow there. In 1775, the messenger who had the permit to begin with the wine harvesting came too late. Due to this coincidence wine farmers discovered the higher Quality of "late" harvested wine so they developed premium wines, berry premium wines and dry berry premium wines all of the highest Quality which founded the fame of Rheingau Riesling throughout the world. The wines from Domäne Schloss Johannesberg and the adjacent vineyard G.H. from Mumm are available for sale and degustation at the "Wine-Cabinet" on the Johannisberg hill.
