The classicist building, which today houses numerous archives, was opened in 1819 as a court theatre according to plans by Georg Moller. With seats for almost 2,000 spectators, Grand Duke Ludewig I wanted to make the opera accessible to a wide audience. After the destruction of the building during the war in September 1944, it was no longer used as an opera house.
