In 1999, a couple from Wiesbaden, Liane and Hermann Rosteck, gave the city of Hochheim the collection of modern and contemporary art as a permeant loan. Hochheim Art Collection, comprising approx. 400 exhibits, which are shown in changing exhibitions, benefits from its variety and its uniqueness.
With its complexity, the collection documents the most important trends of the 20th century. The collectors have known most of the artists and so there is a little story to nearly each of the works. The highlights of this private collection are works of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Marc Chagall, and Wolf Vostell.
Tours
To any opening day there is a short free tour available at the Art Collection. Weekly changing topics are presented on Fridays from 18 to 18.30h and on Sundays from 16 to 16.30h. Artists, works, periods of art and other topics related to art history move to the spotlight. You find an overview on upcoming short tours and topics in the event calendar.
Individual tours for groups can be booked within and out of the regular opening times.
Events
There are constantly interesting events related to art at the Art Collection. Every third Wednesday children have the chance to participate in the art workshop for kids. In addition to that, lectures, openings and topical evenings take place throughout the whole year. See the event calendar for upcoming events.
History
Hochheim Art Collection is located in the basement floor of the Burgeff Villa in Mainzer Street 35. This villa with adjacent side buildings and spacious garden was built for the owners of the sparkling wine factory Burgeff and was bequeathed in 2000 to the City of Hochheim by their last heiress, Mrs Eugenie Hummel. This impressive historicizing mansion was built in 1904 as a freely copied reconstruction of a classicist predecessor building which had burned down shortly before.
