The first major special exhibition at the German Romanticism Museum brings to light a treasure from the depot of the Freies Deutsches Hochstift: the unique collection of original hand drawings that has been brought together here since the end of the 19th century with a specific reference to Goethe and his time. Drawings and watercolors by more than 60 artists reveal the fascinating wealth of ideas as well as the technical and motivic diversity of the art of drawing around 1800. Works by Johann Heinrich Füssli, Caspar David Friedrich, Jakob Philipp Hackert, Angelika Kauffmann and Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein are presented at the highest artistic level. Johann Wolfgang Goethe's famous circle of colors, anatomical and literary illustrations, gifts to friends, and salon art also attest to the ubiquity of drawing in the age of Goethe.
