The current Frankfurt production of the fairy-tale opera Königskinder by Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) premiered at the Opera House on September 30, 2012, drawing attention to a lesser-known work by the creator of the infinitely more popular setting of Hansel and Gretel, who died a hundred years ago.
Frankfurt's General Music Director Sebastian Weigle already conducted the premiere of this production and now returns to the podium of his Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra for the revival after an acclaimed guest performance with Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Newcomers from the ensemble in the principal roles are Gerard Schneider (The King's Son), Iain MacNeil (The Minstrel) and Katharina Magiera (The Witch), the latter artist having already sung the part of the Stablemaid in the premiere. American soprano Heather Engebretson (Die Gänsemagd) is the only guest in the new cast.
