The production of the three one-act operas by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924), summarized under the title Il trittico, from the 2007 season
Il tabarro (The Coat) tells the love triangle between young Giorgetta, her elderly husband Michele - the captain of a barge - and his rival Luigi, which ends fatally for the latter. Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) is set in a convent. The heroine once retreated there under pressure from her noble family after the birth of her illegitimate child and now has to learn from her hard-hearted aunt that her son died years ago. Angelica then commits suicide. The story of the Florentine rascal Gianni Schicchi, who is hired by the rapacious Donati family to secure the inheritance of the recently deceased Buoso, is more cheerful. By means of a trick, he manages both to get hold of the old man's fortune and to help his daughter Lauretta to her love happiness.
