The fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) is one of the core works of the repertoire. Many an audience member counts this piece among the first impressions he or she gained in an opera house - often as a child.
The plot follows the well-known fairy tale: The siblings Hansel and Gretel get lost while picking berries in the forest. There they meet not only the Sandman and the Dewman, but also the dubious Crispy Witch, who takes them prisoner. But the children are able to free themselves from the clutches of the old woman and thus also save the gingerbread children who had shared their lot before them.
