The opening concert of the Ensemble Modern and the hr-Sinfonieorchester presents one of the monumental key works of the 20th century. With his full-length orchestral work "Les Espaces Acoustiques", the French composer Gérard Grisey created a cycle over a period of eleven years in which each subsequent part expands and enlarges the acoustic space of the previous one. "Composing not with notes, but with sounds" and "taking into account the relativity of our perception" are two of Gérard Grisey's demands on composing. An artistic vision that he probably came closest to with "Les Espaces Acoustiques". Each of the six instrumental works in the cycle expands the acoustic dimensions of the previous one: starting with a prologue for solo viola, the instrumentation increases up to a large orchestra with four solo horns: the listener experiences a huge acoustic network that gradually builds up. Having entered a small chamber at the beginning, they end up standing in a gigantic cathedral of sound.
