The Jewish Community of Frankfurt am Main and the State Association of Jewish Communities in Hesse are marking the 84th anniversary of the destruction of synagogues in Germany with a memorial service. On November 9, 1938, Jewish houses of worship also burned everywhere in Hesse. As the only one of Frankfurt's formerly four large synagogues, only the Westend Synagogue survived the Reich Pogrom Night and the bombing raids of World War II, albeit severely damaged.
Prayers and speeches will be heard there on November 9, 2022. The speakers will be Prof. Dr. Salomon Korn, Chairman of the Board of the Jewish Community Frankfurt am Main, the Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt Main and, representing the Prime Minister of Hesse, State Secretary Uwe Becker.
The keynote speaker will be the renowned journalist, moderator and "ZEIT" editor-in-chief Giovanni di Lorenzo. He will speak about current and possible future challenges in the defense against anti-Semitism.
Community Rabbis Avichai Apel and Julian-Chaim Soussan will offer prayers.
The public is invited to attend the commemoration.
