The German Leather Museum is the worldwide only museum that presents the manufacture, ornamentation and utilization of the material leather. It was founded in the year 1917 by Hugo Eberhardt in the leather-city Offenbach am Main, originally as a collection of historic samples for the training of young craftsmen, designers and leather goods producers.

Today the DLM combines three collections: in the Collection of Applied Art there are master works of European leather design from the Middle Ages to the present. A specialized collection in its own right is the Shoe Museum with over 15,000 exhibits, bringing together the footwear of all people from more than four millennia. Highlights of the Ethnological Collection are the America, Africa and Asia departments, especially the worldwide important shadow-puppet figures from Turkey, Egypt, China and South-East Asia, as well as significant collections from the cultures of Japan, China, Tibet and the Polar regions.
