When the ancient Romans retreated from the Taunus, they also took with them the region’s Celtic name. Only many centuries later was the name “Taunus” rediscovered. In the meantime, the people living here referred to the low mountain range with its premier landmark, the “Große Feldberg” (881 metres), simply as “the Heights”. Today, the entire region is known by this name – the Taunus Heights. Unsurprisingly, really, the Taunus being a place of countless highlights.
